아시아의 인형들은 나무와 면, 비단, 짚, 진흙 등으로 만들어 졌으며 재단과 봉제에 구애되기 보다는 매우 다채로운 색상과 선의 자유로움과 겹침이 섬세하고 독창적이다.

고대의 인형들은 주로 토우나 부장품 등으로 남겨져 있으며 현대에는 아시아 각국에서 생산되는 면, 마, 실크 등의 소재로 시대적 풍습과 복식을 다채롭게 표현하고 있다.

Asian dolls were made from wood, cloth, silk, straw, and clay that made the dolls not restricted in the rules of sewing and cutting. Asian dolls present various colors and lines along with its authenticity and delicacy. Ancient dolls are mostly left as a tow or grave goods. Asian dolls nowadays are made from hemp, cloth, and silk, and carries its own periodical custom and culture.

아프리카에서는 인형을 주로 풍요와 다산을 기원하는 종교 의식에 사용했다.아프리카 대표적 인형은 ashantiakua'ba fertility doll 아쿠아바(삼신할매)라 부르는 목각과 부족국가의 전통 의상을 입은 검고도 화려한 기념적 인형들이 대표적이다. 구슬과 조가비 등으로 장식한 미학적인 목각마스크도 예술적 경지에 이르러 있다. 아프리카 인형들은 자연과 신께 드리는 기원 제물과도 같은 의미이며, 그 표정들 속에 인간 원류에 대한 무한한 그리움을 본다.

The most renown doll of Africa is called “Ashanti akuba fertility doll” which is a wooden doll that wears charming traditional clothing that serves recreational and celebrational purposes. Decorated with marbles and shells, its presences are truly profound. African dolls are like a sacrificial offering to their god that evokes the charm of an unknown land filled with purified energy and infinite longing.

‘이누이트’라는 말은 종종 에스키모와 동의어로 쓰인다. 겨울이 아주 길고 혹한인 지역에서 살던 이누이트 인디언들은 무두질한 물개 가죽과 늑대와 여우 털을 주 소재로 입고 여름철에도 얇은 가죽에 구슬이나 비즈로 장식한 의상을 많이 입고 있다. 몽고인과 비슷한 외모와 강인한 삶의 역사를 간직하고 있는 에스키모 인디언 인형들은 한국인에게는 더욱 의미가 있고 정겹다.

The term “Inuit” carries an equivalent meaning to the term Eskimo. To prevent to fearsome cold of Alaska, Eskimos wore thick clothing made from leather and fur from wolves and foxes. Eskimos look alike with Koreans and both shares a strong history of life which makes us more related and friendly towards Eskimos.

유럽 인형의 역사를 보면소녀들은 보통 결혼할 나이가 될 때까지 인형을 가지고 놀았으며, 결혼을 한 후에는 고대 로마에서 달의 여신으로 알려진 디아나(Diana), 그리스에서 풍요의 여신으로 숭배되는 아르테미스(Artemis)의 제단에 인형을 바쳤다고 한다. 고대에서 현대까지 인간들에게 사랑과 영감을 불러일으키는 유럽 인형들은 아름답고 장식적인 인간의 역사와 스토리와 함께 영원한 아바타로써 우리 곁에 존재하기를 바라는 마음이다.

Among the history of the European doll, girls usually played with them until they were old enough to get married. After the marriage, they offered their doll to the alter of Diana, known as the Goddess of the Moon and Artemis, the Goddess of prosperity. 유럽의 바다 항로에서 멀리 떨어진 지역에 사는 안데스 부족들 가운데 일부는 지금까지 잉카 제국의 농사풍습과 고유문화를 보존해 왔으며 남미 인디오 전통 인형들은 라마의 양털로 짠 판쵸나 움직이는 지붕이라 불리는 챙이 아주 넓은 솜브레로 등 신체를 자연에서 보호하며 친화적 소재로 의복을 갖추어 입고 아기들과 함께 하는 밝은 컬러의 낙천적이고 가족 중심의 다복한 삶의 풍습을 보여준다.

Tribes like Andes whom avoided the Western influence, still have kept their Incan culture. Some tribes have conserved the traditional agricultural systems and items. Latin Natives are known for their nature friendly dolls that wore poncho which were made from lama fur and sombreros also called as portable roof. Majority of Aboriginal dolls portray optimism and prosperity among families.
